Your granite countertops lend a sophisticated air of gravitas to your living space, but you must keep it clean in order to maintain this luxurious look. Here are a few tips from the pros that you can use to keep your granite looking like the pros.
Make sure that you seal your granite for best results.
Granite is quite durable, but it is even more durable when sealed properly. Check with your manufacturer to see if an industrial strength seal was applied already. You can test test this yourself by simply dropping a spot of water on your countertop.
If the water beads up, then you have a good seal. If the water pools and soaks into the granite, then you are in need of an immediate reseal.
Keep these solutions away from your granite at all costs.
The following solutions should never touch your granite no matter what:
- Windex
Although the brand has earned a reputation for cleaning many surfaces quite well, one of those surfaces is not granite. - Bleach
Any detergent that advertises bleach as an active ingredient is a complete no-no. - Acids from fruits
If your granite countertop is in the kitchen, make sure that you keep fruits from touching it, especially obviously acidic fruits like lemons and limes. Put a cutting board down before slicing anything, and make sure the liquid does not touch the surface.
Use this solution instead to clean your granite well without injuring it.
Use a solution that is comprised of half water, half isopropyl alcohol. Apply this solution over the entire countertop area and allow it to soak in. This soaking process should take anywhere from three to six minutes.
Once the solution has soaked into the granite, wipe the granite clean with a soft cloth that is dampened with tap water.
Follow this easy process for a routine granite cleaning.
First, make sure that you wipe up any spills as soon as you see them. Do not let any food sit for a long time on granite.
Second, clean the countertop with water and a very gentle soap. You do not need harsh solutions to clean granite.
Lastly, make sure that the cloth that you use to clean granite is always soft – you will never need to scrub granite with a pad that has bristles. Microfiber cloths are usually the best choice to use with your water and soap mixture to clean your granite during a routine mop up.
